Jolie Brise Races to Success in 2009

3 November 2009

It must have been something of a relief for Skipper, Toby Marris and his crew of the gaff rigged pilot cutter, the SY Jolie Brise to arrive back in England after an action-packed year, which culminated in competing in the 2009 Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge.

At her re-fit in January 2009, Nauteco's Performance Antifouling in red was selected for the hull, as well as the company's Coma Berenice varnish and Coach Enamel products for the topsides.  A 7,000 mile Trans Atlantic, Caribbean, Eastern US Seaboard race and then back across the pond to the Hamble is more than enough to challenge the quality of any antifoul.  Toby Marris is especially pleased with Nauteco's Performance Antifouling which has kept the Jolie Brise's hull free of fouling for the whole race season.  He rates Nauteco's antifouling as better than other types he has used and is planning to use it again for the forthcoming re-fit.

A very respectable 2nd in Class overall, despite encountering Storm Force 10 mid-Atlantic seas and losing a top mast, is impressive.  Mix into that a crew of Dauntsey's School students, aged 15 to 18 years, which changed at each of the 5 legs of the race, and you can appreciate the competitiveness of this famous gaff rig pilot cutter and the seamanship of her Skipper and crew.  The team must be especially proud of the Jolie Brise's results for the long Tenerife to Hamilton, Bermuda leg, which produced a 1st in Class and 1st Overall on corrected time.

Nauteco's Performance Antifouling is an environmentally-friendly, EU compliant antifoul that uses unique microbiological technology to inhibit marine fouling and keep the hull weed-free.  When catalysed in water, it produces a slippery surface, mimicking the skin of a fish, which results in improved hull speed efficiency.  These benefits are increasingly recognised by both sail and power boat owners, ranging from TransAt single-handed and charter offshore racing yachts, to the US Homeland Security's coastal fast patrol boats and, of course, the leisure boat owner.

Following the next re-fit, the Jolie Brise, built in 1913, will be looking good for a busy season in 2010, based in the UK and incorporating voyages to Scotland and Europe with an appearance at the Cowes Regatta.  Nauteco looks forward to a continued and successful working relationship with the Jolie Brise and her team.
